Facilities management professionals are often the unsung heroes of their organizations.

To honor their contributions to keeping operations running smoothly, FMX is recognizing those who’ve gone above and beyond during the past year.

Each of these finalists was nominated by a peer for their outstanding work in the field. In the leadup to the unveiling of the winner at our 2025 National Conference, we’re highlighting two finalists per week.

This week, we’re spotlighting Andre Johnson a Building Maintenance Operator at Radnor Township School District.

Q&A with TOY Finalist Andre Johnson

How long have you held your current position?

5 years

How did you get to where you are today?

Started as a substitute custodian, took trade classes and eventually was able to move in current position as Building Maintenance Operator.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

  • Start the day by opening up the building and doing a walkthrough of the building, checking for any issues (leaks/plumbing and lighting)
  • Setup for before-care and breakfast in the cafeteria
  • Clear outside campus of debris to make sure walkways/paths are safe along with clearing outside trash receptacles.
  • Check for deliveries and bring up to the main office
  • Check and adjust temperatures in the building
  • Complete any building setups (events/staff development)
  • Clean breakfast and setup cafeteria for lunch
  • Meet with principal and main office staff
  • Complete FMX work orders
  • Lunch room cleanup and trash removal/receive deliveries 
  • During lunch hours, on call for any building issues
  • Cafeteria final cleanup
  • Classroom deliveries, complete FMX Tickets and preventative maintenance
  • Setup for after school programs and clubs
  • Be on call and assist with dismissal

Are there any mentors or key figures who have influenced your career?

My assistant supervisor Vaughn Bryan helped guide me early in my building maintenance career and still to this day is a key figure with my professional growth.

Can you share a specific project or accomplishment you’re particularly proud of?

Selling my first investment property to a first-time homebuyer. 

What challenges do you face in your work, and how do you overcome them?

Working around teacher and student schedules along with using time management properly to not distract students/staff from academics.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to those starting in the field?

Good relationships when dealing with customers (students/staff).
